Rhubarb Glaskins Perpetual is a great variety first grown in Brighton in 1920! Producing eye-catching bright red stems with an amazing juicy flavour, this particular variety is quick to establish in your garden or allotment, making them ideal to be grown from seed. Rhubarb Glaskins Perpetual can be harvested much later than other typical varieties hence its namesake ‘perpetual’, giving it a much longer season.
This variety can be sown in either autumn or spring time. With an autumn sowing, you could be able to harvest lightly within a year! Rhubarb Glaskins Perpetual is a fantastic rhubarb variety, simply plant them once and crop for up to 20 years! The rhubarb produced by these seeds tastes absolutely amazing in pies, crumbles and baking in general. Harvest your Rhubarb Glaskins Perpetual between May and mid-August. The established plants from these seeds grow to a height of 61cm–70cm (24–28"); spread 101–150cm (38–59").
Growing Information
Sow seeds individually from March to April at a depth of 1.5mm (¼") in good quality seed compost. Place in a propagator or seal the pots inside a polythene bags at around 20–25°C (70–75°F), germination up to 21 days. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Once the seedlings have emerged lower the temperature until they are large enough to handle. Move to a cold frame before planting out in late spring in a sunny position in well-drained soil. Alternatively, seeds can be started November–December.
